Excellent photo.
It remembera me the '50s italian films.
It could be a cover of an Elsa Morante book too.
More blurred background could help improving foreground dominancy.

I'm not sure whether it's the shot or me, but it definitely communicates something.
Compression sure doesn't help, but there's nothing you can do about that.
You might want to share some exif data, that's always something helpful in order to understand what you might test the next time you are about to shoot pics like this one.
As for the photo, I can tell you had your shutter a bit too slow, and that's why I get the idea that the photo itself isn't as sharp as you wanted it to be...
A VR lens would have helped.

... or at least ironing it would have helped a lot...those wrinckles are in fact a bit disturbing.
As for the rest, I like the expression you captured and how she looks focused in some sort of intimate thoughts... yet I would have prefered a larger crop, maybe.
I see a slight out of focus, but it might be the resizing + compression, I'm afraid... |

I like this portrait: nice pose, nice expression, very nice diagonal composition and nice B&W
I do like the focus too and depth of field, but the background need just a bit of ironing (... I hope it's the right word... ) just to avoid any kind of distraction from the intense glance of the woman
now an italian version for non english-speaking folks
E per i non anglofoni, una versione in italiano
Un ritratto che mi piace: bella la posa, l'espressione, molto bella la composizione diagonale e il BN
Mi piace anche il fuoco e la profondita' di campo, solo che lo sfondo avrebbe bisogno di una stiratina, per evitare qualsiasi distrazione dallo sguardo intenso della donna
